FastHosts sells VPS hosting with full root access, UK and overseas locations, and a choice of Linux configurations. I bought VPS 1, examined the buying and management experience, ran CPU, memory, NVMe and network benchmarks, and questioned technical support about recovering a broken server. So how much can you reasonably expect from its cheapest VPS, and what costs or responsibilities come with it? Read on for my results.
My scores reflect a purchased VPS 1, benchmarks run on its Ubuntu installation, the ordering and Cloud Panel experience, and a real technical-support conversation. Fasthosts offers general-purpose VPS and RAM-optimized configurations, with introductory discounts on selected plans. The general-purpose packages suit websites and lightweight applications, while RAM-optimized options provide additional memory for demanding workloads.
During checkout, I could choose monthly billing without a long-term commitment, a 12-month contract billed monthly, or annual upfront payment. I selected VPS 1 on a 12-month agreement and received the advertised introductory discount.
However, the promotional pricing comes with several conditions buyers should understand:
I also checked payment options. Fasthosts displayed credit and debit card payments, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay during checkout. I paid by card without encountering any payment issues. Its billing terms require customers to maintain a valid payment card or PayPal account for ongoing payments.
Another important consideration is backup protection. During checkout, Fasthosts offered Acronis Cyber Protect as a paid extra. I skipped it, and technical support later confirmed that Fasthosts would not retain a restorable backup of my server data.
The introductory prices apply for a limited period, after which standard rates take effect. Fasthosts’ promotional terms also exclude pay-as-you-go contracts, so choosing a shorter commitment means giving up that discount.
For smaller Linux projects, VPS 1 offers an affordable starting point. VPS 2 doubles its CPU, memory, and storage allocations, while VPS 4 provides more capacity for resource-intensive applications.
My advice: Compare the full 12-month cost, including backups and other extras, before choosing a plan. With no advertised free trial or applicable 30-day money-back guarantee, it’s particularly important to select the right configuration from the beginning.
For a VPS, performance is about more than a headline CPU or storage figure. I want to know how quickly the server completes CPU work, how well its memory and disk handle common operations, how reliable its network measurements look, and what happens when resources stay busy.
These questions matter if you plan to host websites, an API, a database, or several services on the same machine.
I ran the benchmarks from inside the Fasthosts VPS, using sysbench for CPU and memory, fio for storage, Ookla Speedtest CLI for network observations, and stress-ng for short sustained-load checks.
The results describe this instance at the time of testing; they are not a provider-wide guarantee.
I chose VPS 1, the smallest option in Fasthosts’ general-purpose VPS family, to find out what buyers can expect before moving to a more expensive tier.
Fasthosts lists VPS 1 with 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, and 60GB NVMe storage. The next step, VPS 2, doubles these resources to 2 vCPUs, 4GB RAM, and 120GB NVMe; VPS 4 goes to 4 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, and 240GB NVMe. These are advertised specifications, not benchmarks of the higher tiers.

Fasthosts advertises 1 Gbit/s bandwidth for its VPS range. I selected the UK data centre and Ubuntu 26.04; the operating system reported Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS on kernel 7.0.0-34-generic, with one AMD EPYC-Milan virtual processor.
The guest showed 1.8GiB of RAM and a 58G root filesystem, consistent with the way operating systems report and allocate marketed capacity.
At the start, around 579MiB of memory was in use and 1.2GiB was available; the VPS had no configured swap. That distinction matters on a small server. The headline 2GB allocation is reasonable for a lightweight workload, but adding a database, control panel, background workers, and monitoring can quickly consume the remaining headroom.
The table below captures the measurements I would pay attention to before choosing a workload. I discuss the test conditions and limitations separately, because a single synthetic benchmark is not the same as a live website serving customers.

CPU capacity determines how quickly a server can execute application code, handle request processing, perform encryption, and run background jobs.
On VPS 1, a single virtual CPU means an individual heavy process can consume a substantial share of the available compute capacity.
I used sysbench’s prime-number calculation test with a limit of 20,000. The first 10-second run processed 1,015.40 events per second, with an average event latency of 0.98ms and a 95th-percentile latency of 0.94ms. This provides a reproducible baseline for arithmetic-heavy work, not an estimate of HTTP requests per second.
I also ran the test under its multi-thread label. Because VPS 1 has only one CPU thread available, this was effectively another single-worker run, not a test of multi-core scaling.
It returned 1,012.44 events per second, very close to the first result. That agreement is encouraging for repeatability over two short trials, but it does not tell us how this plan will perform under many simultaneous user requests.
Verdict on CPU Performance
The one-core result was consistent across the two runs and gives VPS 1 a usable starting point for lightweight application logic or small services.
For a VPS, memory has two separate questions: how quickly data moves through RAM and how much RAM the application can actually use. I measured memory throughput with sysbench using 1KiB blocks and a total of 10,240MiB of transfer operations.
That is a workload volume processed by the benchmark, not an indication that the VPS physically contains 10GB of memory.
The sequential write test processed 3,889.95MiB per second and finished in approximately 2.63 seconds. These figures show the speed of the synthetic in-memory operation under the selected test settings, rather than the performance of a particular database or application.
The read test was faster, at 4,716.00MiB per second, taking about 2.17 seconds. The two readings show that memory bandwidth was not an obvious bottleneck in these brief tests. Capacity is a bigger practical concern: the guest exposed only about 1.8GiB RAM and had no swap configured, so a memory-hungry application has little room for unexpected spikes.
Verdict on Memory Performance
Storage performance affects application installs, log writes, database operations, backups, and the time it takes to move or retrieve files. I tested the VPS’s NVMe-backed storage with fio, looking at both sustained sequential transfers and mixed random 4KiB activity. These are different workloads, so the MiB/s and IOPS figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
The sequential test reported 481MiB/s for writes and 478MiB/s for reads, each over a roughly 30-second run. The output recorded about 14GiB of transferred data per direction during these timed runs.
Those rates are useful for understanding this instance’s bulk file I/O behaviour, but they do not establish the full capability of the underlying physical NVMe device.
In the mixed 4KiB test, fio reported approximately 6,539 read IOPS and 6,536 write IOPS, each transferring about 25.5MiB/s. For small-file and database-style operations, IOPS is often more revealing than large sequential transfer rates. The read and write workloads ran together, so the individual figures describe the mix rather than two isolated maximums.
Verdict on Storage Performance
The NVMe-backed disk delivered useful sequential throughput and thousands of small-block operations per second in my tests. That looks suitable as a baseline for ordinary website files, application packages, logs, and modest databases.
Network performance matters for downloads, off-server backups, API calls, and visitors connecting from different regions.
I tested the UK VPS against two London Speedtest endpoints. Because both targets were in London, these measurements describe nearby network paths; they do not establish latency for visitors in North America, Africa, or Asia.
Against Orbital Net in London, the connection recorded 6.07ms idle latency, 3,517.58Mbps download, 2,684.12Mbps upload, and 0% reported packet loss. The first run suggests a fast local path under that particular test’s conditions.
The second run, against Exascale in London, returned a similar idle latency of 6.05ms and a higher download reading of 4,027.40Mbps. Upload, however, fell to 164.73Mbps, with packet loss still reported at 0%. That is a substantial variation between endpoints, so I cannot describe upload performance as consistently fast on the strength of these two results.
Fasthosts’ product page lists 1 Gbit/s bandwidth, while these short Speedtest readings include download figures above 1Gbps.
I would not interpret that difference as a guaranteed higher-speed connection. The tools measure a particular path and burst of traffic, not sustained transfer capacity, fair-use limits, or the performance of a real application. The upload discrepancy also needs more testing before I would rely on this VPS for frequent large outbound transfers.
Verdict on Network Performance
Short benchmark runs tell me how quickly an operation completes; stress tests help check whether the server can keep working when a resource stays busy. I used stress-ng for three separate 180-second tests targeting CPU, memory, and disk I/O.
I was looking primarily for crashes, skipped tests, or reported failures, not trying to turn its bogo-ops figures into a real-world website capacity rating.
The single-worker CPU stress test ran for 180 seconds and completed successfully, recording no failed or skipped stressors. That shows the CPU test could remain active for three minutes in this configuration, not that performance would stay identical during prolonged production traffic.
The memory test used two workers and allocated roughly 336MB between them, based on the memory then available. It also passed after 180 seconds. The tool warned that only about 448MB of free memory and swap was available at the start, a useful reminder that this small VPS has limited headroom under load.
Finally, the disk I/O stress run used two workers and about 1GB of temporary file space. It completed in approximately 181 seconds with no reported failures. I did not run CPU, memory, and disk stress simultaneously, and these tests do not establish performance over days or under real visitor traffic.
Verdict on Stability Under Stress
I would consider VPS 1 a sensible starting point for a small Linux website, development environment, or lightweight backend where cost matters more than abundant resources.
Its storage results and successful stress runs are encouraging, but one vCPU, 2GB RAM, and no configured swap leave limited headroom.
For the Fasthosts VPS review, I wanted to see how much technical knowledge a customer needs before a server is ready to manage. I followed the VPS purchase journey, inspected the account dashboard, and opened the separate Cloud Panel for a VPS 1 instance.
My journey covers plan selection, operating system and location choices, optional backups, checkout, and the controls available after purchase.
I focused on decisions that affect a real buyer:
This is an assessment of the interface and recorded purchase process, not a timed provisioning benchmark or an SSH deployment test.
I began on the Fasthosts homepage. VPS Hosting appeared directly under Hosting in the main navigation, alongside Web Hosting, Windows Hosting, and Reseller Hosting. That made the server product easy to find without searching through account menus.
The VPS landing page led with a discounted introductory offer and a Choose Your Package button. It also highlighted UK data centres and 24/7 support.
The key buying details appeared farther down the page, so I used the button to reach the actual plan comparison rather than judge the offer by the headline price.
The comparison page made hardware allowances clear. I could filter between General purpose and RAM-optimised configurations and compare CPU, memory, storage, and the displayed rate on each row. VPS 1 offered 1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, and 60GB NVMe storage; VPS 2 showed 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM, and 120GB NVMe.
I selected VPS 1 for this review because it was the entry-level configuration, sufficient for examining the control panel without paying for resources I was not planning to use.
The plan list was easy to interpret because the main specifications were visible before checkout. I liked being able to compare hardware at a glance, although the large introductory offer still required me to examine the configuration and billing terms before judging the real commitment.
After selecting VPS 1, Fasthosts opened a configuration page with the server options on the left and a running order summary on the right. I could choose the operating system, data centre region, cloud backup option, and payment term before adding the VPS to the basket.
Linux was selected, with Ubuntu 26.04 shown in the dropdown. Windows was unavailable on VPS 1, and Fasthosts explained that the plan did not meet its requirements. This is important if you need Windows rather than Linux. You cannot simply change the operating system on every VPS tier.
The Linux dropdown offered other distributions, including AlmaLinux 9 and 10 and Debian 12 and 13. That was useful flexibility for buyers with an existing application stack or preferred Linux environment. I stayed with Ubuntu 26.04 for my test.
The data centre selector showed UK, Europe, and USA choices. I retained the UK location. I appreciated being able to make that decision during setup rather than discovering the server location only after payment, although I did not test availability or performance in the other regions.
Backup protection was not included in my selected configuration. The form had a No Cloud Backup choice and a paid option powered by Acronis Cyber Protect, with a clear warning that the server would not be protected against data loss without it.
This was useful disclosure, but it also meant a low headline VPS price did not automatically include a managed recovery solution.
The billing choices also mattered. I could pay monthly without a contract, pay monthly on a 12-month agreement, or pay for a year upfront at a lower monthly equivalent. My selected 12-month term displayed £5 per month before the introductory discount.
The order summary showed £2 to pay immediately under the promotion. That difference made the contract terms more important than the amount due at checkout.
The page also listed add-on possibilities such as Plesk Web Host Edition and IPv6 addresses, while noting that IPv4 addresses could cost extra. Once I had reviewed the operating system, region, backups, and term, I clicked Add to Basket. I liked the persistent order summary because it kept the immediate payment visible throughout these choices.
Before reaching the basket, Fasthosts presented another offer: 10GB of Acronis Cyber Protect for an additional £2 per month. I could choose Continue Without Cyber Protect, so the upsell was optional, but it introduced another interruption into an otherwise straightforward order.
The basket confirmed VPS 1, the 12-month contract billed monthly, the promotional voucher, and a £2 initial total with no tax shown. It also displayed payment logos and security reassurance.
Importantly, the discounted first payment did not turn this into a month-to-month no-contract service.
The setup flow explained the major server choices clearly, especially operating system compatibility, location, and contract options. Its weakness was commercial friction: backup protection cost extra, and I encountered a separate Acronis offer before checkout. I would double-check the renewal terms and decide on an independent backup strategy before buying.
After the basket, the checkout moved through account creation, billing details, confirmation, and payment. Fasthosts showed the stages in a progress bar, making it easy to understand what remained.
The account form asked for a name, email address, and password, and explained its strong-password requirements.
As I completed the form, green checkmarks and a strength bar confirmed valid entries and a very strong password. One detail I would read carefully was the marketing wording: the checkbox related to opting out of messages rather than simply opting in. The form was easy to complete, but that choice was less intuitive than the technical validation.
The account creation screen briefly displayed a processing message. I did not measure how long this stage lasted, so I would not claim an exact signup or provisioning time from the screenshot alone.
The final Confirm and Pay screen kept the total visible and offered card payment as well as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. I paid by card, was charged, received an order-confirmation email, and reached the customer dashboard without a failed-payment loop or another purchase step.
The screen also offered a link to the recurring payment schedule, which is useful given the introductory discount and 12-month term.
Registration and payment were smooth, and the progress indicator prevented the process from feeling open-ended. I particularly liked the visible final total and recurring-payment link. The marketing checkbox and paid backup offer were the main details that needed extra attention.
Once logged in, I landed in Fasthosts’ main customer area. The left sidebar grouped Domain Names, Web Hosting, Website Builders, WordPress, email, databases, dedicated servers, and virtual private servers.
The main dashboard included account links for passwords, invoices, renewals, and payment options, along with product cards and their Manage actions.
I could open the VPS using Manage on its product card or the Virtual Private Servers entry in the sidebar.
That was logical for someone with several Fasthosts products, although the dashboard did not yet show the server’s console, firewall, or root access details. Those were one level deeper.
The Virtual Private Servers page listed the instance with its Linux icon, server identifier, VPS 1 model, and a pointer to the Cloud Panel for the primary IP address. Selecting the server name opened the next management route. The listing was compact and easy to scan.
The three-dot menu offered Access Cloud Panel, Contract Information, Rename Server, and Upgrade Server. These are sensible account-level actions, but this meant real infrastructure controls were separated from the original dashboard. I could get there without difficulty once I understood that the Cloud Panel was a second interface.
The customer dashboard did a good job of organising products, contracts, and billing. Reaching the VPS was intuitive, but reaching the actual infrastructure controls required another panel and an extra click or two. That separation is manageable for experienced users, though a new VPS customer may not expect it.
Opening Cloud Panel brought up a noticeably different interface, with navigation for Infrastructure, Network, Security, Management, and Costs. The Servers list displayed My VPS with a green status indicator, a public IPv4 address, Ubuntu 26.04, a UK flag, and a size corresponding to the VPS 1 allocation.
Selecting the server opened a more detailed view. This is where I found the information that matters to someone preparing to administer Linux: the host address, root username, an option to reveal the initial password, DNS hostname, operating system, a Plesk licence-key action, and allocated hardware resources.
The configuration summary showed 1 vCore, 2GB RAM, and a 60GB NVMe SSD, matching the VPS 1 plan I had selected.
The page also listed an attached firewall policy, the data centre country, and an action history. A separate On status control and broader Network and Security menus made the panel feel like an infrastructure console rather than a simple website manager.
These controls provide a useful starting point for server administration, although I did not go further to configure firewall rules, install Plesk, restore backups, or deploy an application.
Fasthosts exposed the essential server information without burying it in account settings, and the hardware allocation in Cloud Panel matched the plan comparison. I liked the visible status, credentials access, network navigation, and firewall policy. However, the control panel assumes some familiarity with administering a Linux server, and I did not test the underlying management actions end to end.
Fasthosts provided a straightforward VPS setup experience, from comparing server configurations to choosing an operating system, data centre, and payment term. Checkout was smooth, and I appreciated how clearly the platform displayed the available options and associated costs.
The customer dashboard was equally easy to use, with organized navigation and quick access to my VPS. Although server management required opening a separate Cloud Panel, I found the essential controls, including root credentials, firewall settings, networking, and server resources, easy to locate.
The main drawbacks were the additional backup costs, promotional upsells, and contract terms that required careful attention during checkout. The separate management interfaces also introduced a few extra steps.
Fasthosts advertises 24/7 customer assistance alongside self-service documentation. Here are the main support routes available to customers:

The official support page lists 0333 0142 700 for telephone support and directs customers to the Control Panel for known system issues.
Account authentication may require a support code. For this review, I tested technical live chat and examined the public Knowledge Base; I did not test phone or email response times.
I contacted technical support with a realistic VPS 1 scenario. My server was running Ubuntu 26.04, and I wanted to know what I could do if incorrect firewall or SSH settings blocked remote access.
I asked whether Cloud Panel offered a console or rescue option and if Fasthosts could assist if I could not regain access myself.
The chatbot first asked me to choose Technical Support or Sales, then verified my account email and a support code sent by email. I completed the checks without needing to repeat the process, although an account-less visitor would not be able to follow this same verified support route.
I opened the chat at 12:16 PM. The automated queue showed an estimated six-minute wait, but Dan introduced himself at 12:17 PM, about a minute after I started. That was considerably faster than the estimate.
Because Dan asked how he could assist, I reposted the full VPS recovery question at 12:22 PM. He provided his first technical answer at 12:23 PM, roughly a minute later. From opening the chat to receiving that answer took about seven minutes, including verification and the time before I repeated my question. The whole conversation ran until approximately 12:35 PM.
Dan identified the SSH KVM option in Cloud Panel. He said it links directly to the server so I could access the machine and correct the configuration, and he offered to guide me to the relevant page.
That was a relevant answer. If ordinary SSH access stops working, a console accessed through the hosting panel can be much more useful than instructions that assume SSH still works. It also fit the server-management environment I had already seen in Cloud Panel.
I declined the walkthrough because I only wanted to establish the available recovery route. As a result, this test confirms the agent’s stated guidance, not that I used the console to fix a deliberately broken firewall or SSH configuration.
He also did not explain whether a separate rescue environment was available or explicitly define how far support would go in repairing a locked server.
I then asked about a more serious failure: an Ubuntu update that prevents the server from booting. My VPS 1 did not include the optional Cloud Backup add-on, so I wanted to establish if Fasthosts held any default recovery snapshots and what a reinstall would mean for applications, databases and files.
Dan’s answer was direct. He said Fasthosts would not hold a restorable backup of my server in that situation. The company had basic operating-system images, but applying one would reimage the VPS and erase its existing data. In other words, an operating-system image is not a substitute for a backup of the customer’s working server.
This was the most important finding of the live-chat test. Without a separate backup, a full reinstall could put both the application and its data at risk. Anyone intending to host a database, online store or production service should have a recovery plan before something goes wrong, not after.
Dan also clarified the support boundary: repairing the operating system would normally fall outside Fasthosts’ scope of support. He recommended hiring a server engineer through the company’s partner network. That was useful transparency, but it also means buyers should not expect the standard VPS support team to rebuild a broken Linux installation for them.
I had also asked about additional charges. Dan did not quote a recovery price or confirm what a partner engineer would charge, so I cannot assess the cost of that route.
He answered the backup and support-responsibility questions clearly, but left this commercial detail unresolved.
I liked how quickly I reached a human agent and how clearly Dan explained the difference between an access problem and a full operating-system failure.
SSH KVM gave me a potential recovery route for lost SSH access, while the warning about reimaging made the risks of declining Cloud Backup unmistakable. His manner was polite and helpful throughout, and he did not promise server repairs that the company would not provide.
Next, I reviewed Fasthosts’ public support site. Its homepage has a prominent search field, six broad categories (Account Admin, Additional Services, Domains, Email Hosting, Resellers and Servers) and a Top Viewed Articles list.
The landing page is clean and easy to scan, although VPS owners must open Servers rather than selecting a dedicated VPS tile at the top level.
The top articles focus on common account and email tasks. That makes sense for a general hosting audience but is less useful when you arrive with a Linux server problem. I found the VPS material by opening Servers.
The Servers section was more substantial. It contained eight subcategories: Classic Dedicated Server, Cloud, Cloud VPS, CloudNX Bare Metal, CloudNX Cloud Server, Dedicated Server, Plesk and Virtual Private Server. Each category showed sample articles and a View More link.
I appreciated the separation between different infrastructure products, and the category page also listed recent practical guides on root-password resets, IPv6 addressing, reverse DNS, filesystem checks and SSL certificates. Some article dates were from 2026, which suggested the documentation was still being updated.
However, seeing both Cloud VPS and Virtual Private Server as separate categories could make the correct path less obvious for someone who has simply bought a plan called VPS 1. Clearer cross-links between plan names and documentation categories would help.
Opening Virtual Private Server revealed a more focused article list. It included VPS Getting started, upgrading VPS Edition 1 and Edition 2 servers, installing Plesk on a Windows VPS, accessing an n8n service and installing OpenClaw on a Fasthosts VPS.
This was a useful mix of initial setup, product management and application deployment, with the product version specified on some titles.
To judge the quality of the actual instructions, I opened Installing the OpenClaw Service on a Fasthosts VPS, dated June 12, 2026. It was a practical deployment guide rather than a short feature description.
The article began with prerequisites: Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 LTS, at least 2GB of RAM with 4GB recommended, and an API key for an LLM provider. It then walked through updating the system, creating a dedicated non-root user, installing OpenClaw, configuring the service and accessing its dashboard through an SSH tunnel.
I found the command blocks and numbered stages useful. They gave a technically confident reader something concrete to run and explained why the dashboard was accessed through a local connection rather than simply exposing the service publicly. The guide also included a feedback prompt at the end.
There are two qualifications. First, my test VPS ran Ubuntu 26.04, which was not among the versions listed in this guide, so I would check compatibility rather than assume the commands apply unchanged. Second, this was an installation tutorial, not a recovery guide. It did not answer the questions from my support chat about rescuing a non-booting VPS or recovering lost data without backups.

The VPS provides infrastructure and administrative access, but you are responsible for much of the operating-system and application maintenance. In my live-chat test, support said recovering a broken operating system was outside its normal scope and referred me to specialist engineers. Do not treat the 24/7 support offer as a promise of hands-on Linux administration.
Not with the VPS 1 configuration I purchased. Acronis Cyber Protect was available as a paid Cloud Backup add-on, and I selected the no-backup option. Support confirmed Fasthosts would not hold a restorable copy of my server data in that situation. Its basic operating-system images can reinstall a server, but reimaging erases existing applications, files and databases.
